How much bacteriostatic water should you add to a peptide vial?
Start with the target concentration from the applicable product documentation or laboratory protocol. Then divide the vial mass by that concentration.

Does adding more water change the amount of peptide?

A 5 mg vial still contains 5 mg of labeled peptide mass after the liquid volume changes. What changes is how much of that mass is present in each milliliter.

More liquid creates a lower concentration. Less liquid creates a higher concentration. The total labeled mass stays the same.
How do you calculate peptide concentration?
If the liquid volume is already known, turn the first formula around:
Concentration (mg/mL) = vial mass (mg) ÷ total liquid volume (mL)
For a 10 mg vial with a total liquid volume of 2 mL:
10 mg ÷ 2 mL = 5 mg/mL
To express that concentration in micrograms:
5 mg/mL × 1,000 = 5,000 mcg/mL
The metric prefixes are the reason this works: 1 milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. NIST’s SI prefix reference defines “milli” as 10⁻³ and “micro” as 10⁻⁶.

What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP is sterile water containing a bacteriostatic preservative. The DailyMed label describes a common formulation containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol in a multiple-dose container.
The word “bacteriostatic” refers to the preservative. It does not tell you how much liquid a particular vial needs. That number still comes from the required concentration and the mass-to-concentration formula.
Is bacteriostatic water the same as sterile water?
No. The simple difference is the preservative:
- Bacteriostatic water contains a bacteriostatic preservative.
- Sterile water is preservative-free.
They should not be treated as automatically interchangeable. Match the diluent to the applicable product documentation or laboratory protocol, then use the calculator for the arithmetic.
